After doing this and restarting the kernel of the IPython console, or creating a new console, all Matplotlib figures will be created in a new window with controls for zooming and panning. Finally, if you want to switch between Inline and Automatic while working in the console, you need to run these commands.

No plots at all. If I switch this drop-down to Qt, or uncheck "Activate support", it only plots the first subplot, or part of it, and then stops:. How do I get the old behavior of 4 side-by-side subplots in a single figure that I can interact with? You can quickly control this by typing built-in magic commands in Spyder's IPython console, which I find faster than picking these from the preferences menu.

Changes take immediate effect, without needing to restart Spyder or the kernel. Click on the Plots tab above the console. Then at the top right corner of the plots screen click on the options button.

I think this should go as a bug report to pythonxy. My naive guess is that they are using pyplot to handle all there plotting and getting bitten in the butt for it which seems wrong, because they have their own qt widget. There is not enough information here to sort out what is going wrong. It seems my script is producing matplotlib errors which are then sent somewhere other than the IPython console.

They show up if I use the Qt console instead, and now that I look for it, they show up in Spyder's regular Console tab. If I make a more simple script, it works, whether state machine or object-oriented. I assumed I had to change some IPython settings because of the new inline plots. Active Oldest Votes. It expects dimensions in inches, which caught me out the first time I tried to use it. There are some plants for a rich backend that would allow plots to be manipulated live, using HTML5, but I think it will be a few more months before that's ready.

If you're using the notebook on your local computer, for now the easiest option might be not to use inline mode, so the plots pop up as separate windows. I found it better to use the nbagg backend that provides the same interactive tools but also allows to save graphs by the right-click menu:. I did find mdplt3 quite slow. I implemented this in my Jupyter Notebook 4. Doesn't work for me. This a great solution. If you try it and it doesn't work, check your version of matplotlib. I think this was introduced in version 1.

Which, to be fair, wasn't the original question asked above. Just drag the right bottom corner of the plot. Thomas K Thomas K Yes it is - with a recent version of matplotlib, you can now select the nbagg backend.
