Data integrity is the name of the game, and TrueNAS leaves nothing about your data to chance. In-flight data corruption is automatically detected and repaired before it ever reaches disk, and bit rot and data decay are identified and scrubbed clean. This ensures data is always pristine. TrueNAS maximizes storage efficiency by offering compression, deduplication, and thin provisioning at no extra cost. TAC intelligently adjusts its compression ratio without wasting system resources.

Before data is stored, TrueNAS dynamically detects and compresses what it can and skips over any data too inefficient to be worthwhile. Most storage appliances require additional licenses for advanced features — but not TrueNAS. Unlimited file version retention, restoration, and replication are at your fingertips.

Data is automatically protected locally against unintentional alteration, such as ransomware or malware, with minimal storage consumption. Data can be replicated locally, remotely, or to the cloud for backups or disaster recovery. With the power of TrueNAS, any data protection or disaster recovery policy is simple to implement and maintain.Sitting between the all-flash TrueNAS Z50 and the hybrid TrueNAS X-Series in the product line, the TrueNAS M-Series delivers up to 10 Petabytes of highly-available and flash-powered network attached storage and rounds out a comprehensive product set that has a capacity and performance option for every storage budget.

The dual-controller design provides high-availability failover and non-disruptive upgrades for mission-critical enterprise environments. By design, the TrueNAS M-Series unleashes cutting-edge persistent memory technology for demanding performance and capacity workloads, enabling businesses to accelerate enterprise applications and deploy enterprise private clouds that are twice the capacity of previous TrueNAS models.

It also supports replication to the Amazon S3, BackBlaze B2, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure cloud platforms and can deliver an object store using the ubiquitous S3 object storage protocol at a fraction of the cost of the public cloud. The modular and tool-less design of the M-Series allows for easy, non-disruptive servicing and upgrading by end-users and support technicians for guaranteed uptime.

Does anyone have any input on if this is as good as Microsoft claims, or if theres any weird quirks that aren't readily apparent in their tech demos? So getting into the whole kerfuffle, I am building out a hyper-v cluster. I've got that all dialed in host side, but the storage side is got me a little stumped.

Fix quoting of generated values in ctl.conf

I initially was pointed to freenas because of replication and zfs's inherent data integrity. However what I am really looking for is that failover capability, and my initial searches didn't bring up as much info as I'd hoped. My alternative is to use windows server to build out an sofs cluster for my csv's. I'm hesistant about this because I'm still new to the industry but have gotten a pretty clear vibe that windows server isnt the best choice for enterprise storage managment.

With that said in studying for my MCSA I've heard a couple people chime in saying that Microsoft has really made some noticable stides with their data managment and that it may be a suitable option for some people.

I'm thinking I might be one of those people. FreeNAS is not reliable enough to use, period. It would make no sense using something fundamentally unreliable in an HA configuration. This isn't even a production level product. No, it's not. Just doing normal HA storage is all you need. Why did yo pick specifically a non-production level product and an expensive one in a field full of enterprise class, free, production ready, products?

All which do this, for free, and way better than either option you mentioned? First, because you never pick a filesystem then pick the system that it runs on. You've got the cart driving the horse. External storage is for extremely large shops, and today almost none, and almost never when dealing with Hyper-V, never for HA, etc. Your goals and technology are the polar opposite of the products you are talking about using. As I said I didn't pick this, it was suggested to me, and I'm still pretty new to the industry so I'm trying to work through this as clearly as I can.

The large majority of my career has been working with Microsoft technologies so windows server is whats familiar, and I had heard some rumbling that this might be a suitable option for storage.Added by Ryan McKenzie over 1 year ago.

Updated over 1 year ago. Active node hard locks, iSCSI clients get data errors and terminate the test. Once in this state the only way out is IPMI power reset or controller re-seat. Just before the panic we see frequent messages on serial console concerning the lagg interfaces flapping and the NVDIMMs losing sync see attached image.

Unfortunately without proper textdump or even backtrace it is difficult to say what has happened there. NTB messages shown here typically appear when the other node is rebooted, so unless you are sure they happened without other node reboot, they may not tell much.

It may be accounting issue or some more serious corruption. Unfortunately without any other input I am not sure where to go next. I've just pushed in few changes for ticket that should make ARC to shrink more aggressively, that may give system some more air to breath and possibly workaround this problem, even though it is probably not a real fix.

You may try next build and see whether it help.

If you want it right now, most part of effect can be achieved by setting vm. Looks more like a lagg issue or something with failover. Test started at pm and failed at pm. Once again both controllers are hard locked. I guess LAGG may also be another victim of memory problem, if assume it was unable to send some management packets due to inability to allocate it. I checked all my network configuration physical and soft to both controllers, I switched to running the other controller as active.

Same results. Over the weekend, the system panicked in a slightly different way with the random small block workload: Still running TrueNAS The passive node does import and failover occurs. UI is responsive. The system does not immediately panic as before, but after a few hours it does panic. The difference is this time the system does fail over to the passive node.San Jose, Calif.
